It started off simply enough. The task was a quick one, and we’d learned their tricks in navigating the system.
We learned the hard way that the rules had changed.
The first time we were faced with the latest discrimination:
Beloved hubby had called in and activated the new credit cards.
I went to fill up the car with gas. Got to the gas station attendant to pay for the tank of gas I’d just purchased. I handed him my newly activated card. A moment later he told me it was denied!
Denied? Try again. Denied again.
Denied? Really? What is wrong with that bank? The card certainly can’t be denied. What do I do now? I don’t have the cash for this transaction. Talk about embarrassment!
I borrowed their phone to call beloved hubby and explain the problem. He called the bank.
You are kidding! Activating the cards didn’t activate the cards at all, even though it is one account and they have the same number. It is our account at that bank. One account, two cards.
No, they tell him. They’ve changed the rules and now you have to activate each card. Each card? What craziness. OK, activate the second card. OK.
Then we knew. They make you activate each card when you call in. Got it. Ridiculous, but – got it.
Then yesterday beloved hubby called Regions Bank to activate our newest replacement cards. Obviously he knew to activate both cards during the call. But….
“Is she there?” they ask. “Here?” he queries. “No, she is working. And I know I need to get both cards activated.”
“No,” they say. “She needs to activate her own card.” What!? This is our joint account, we’re both on it, we are husband and wife, we’ve given permission to talk to either of us at any time about the account. How many more hoops can there be?
“No, we must speak to her personally to activate that card.” Really?
“OK,” beloved hubby tells them. “We won’t make you have to deal with this situation ever again. Cancel the account. Right here, right now.” (You gotta love that man!)
This is discrimination. Discrimination against marriage – against those who choose to share everything and become one in everything. If someone wants to set up their account so that each person is a separate entity, that’s their choice. But for a lot of us, joint account means just that – joint account.
Yep, it’s time to stand up to the latest discrimination and stop the absurdly overreactions of society.
