New Year Musings

It is the beginning of a new year – 2017!  I am looking forward to this year.

One big reason I look forward to this year is because Donald Trump will become President of the United States of America.  I see his election as mainstream America stepping forward to say we have had enough of the triviality and insanity of the social and political realm that have engulfed our country, not only for the last 8 years, but indeed, for several decades.

I look forward to our country becoming better grounded, and moving forward to where everyone is valued and respected, not just those who belong to certain, divisive groups.  To where people are taught to control themselves and their emotions, to lift others and help them, and to be free to experience and learn about the infinite blessings that come when they choose to follow God’s rules and reap the natural consequences of those actions.

Just as parents lovingly teach their children how to be safe and happy by setting up rules that promote those ends, our Father in Heaven has set up parameters that help us learn where safety is and how we can achieve true happiness.  It is not a secret, or unknown, path.

It has been laid out before us, and we have the God-given gift to choose what we will do with it.  I feel that freedom is part of makes 2017 a year to look forward to!  🙂

Suddenly, Political Involvement Sounds Like Fun

With the election of President-elect Trump, politics are actually starting to sound fun to me.  That’s quite a stretch, because I always considered politics to be an incredibly slow and mundane process.  I was amazed that anything actually ever got done.

Then politics took a huge, 180 degree turn, and society started not only radically shifting Its language, policies, and measures, totally opposite from what I thought, felt, and believed, but It went so far as to criticize and negatively label things that were near and dear to my heart.  It decided that I and the majority of people in this country were wrong, and It took legal action against anyone and anything that disagreed with what It wanted!

People were forced to abide by a new set of standards, and differing beliefs and ideas became feared and ridiculed rather than discussed and celebrated.  I believe children would gain greater respect for others, and personal inner strength, if taught in school about the various and diverse religious beliefs in the world.  They would not fear others because they would understand them better.  This would only enrich their lives, and help them be better grounded and more prepared for life.  That is something to celebrate!

If love of country and respect for the flag were taught and exemplified in society people would have something to be proud of.  They would be willing to defend it, and in turn stand up for the poor and underserved.  We need this in our lives in order to be a whole person, as there is something missing inside us otherwise.

And what about race and gender?  Most religious beliefs teach that people are equal, that they have a relationship with God and with each other, and that when we live moral and ethical lives, not only will we be blessed but others will be blessed as well.  Suddenly equality becomes the norm and bigotry goes away.

We have so much more in common than not.  It is time to bring back that commonality and reap the many blessings that follow.

When have you seen evidence of this in your life?

I’m Excited That Donald Trump Won the Election!

I am very happy that Donald Trump has been elected as our next President.  He stands for change, getting rid of things that have gotten so out-of-hand in our country.  That is why I do like him.

Society has become more and more broken by special interests and divisive factions.  I believe Trump will rein them in and allow common sense, truth, and freedom to come to the fore once again.

I look forward to gaining more religious freedom again, and to spending our time, energy, and money on worthy causes.  As we allow people to believe in and worship God, we will see amazing progress.  This is a natural by-product of faith and keeping God’s commandments (which is exactly why He gave us the commandments, because they bless us).  🙂

I am not looking for new legislation and policies so much as doing away with the bad ones.  That’s all I ask.  There is no way to legislate away every possible negative in life.  It is much easier and beneficial to set high standards that help and allow people to grow.

Let’s decrease the size of government and give us back the freedom to live good and righteous lives.

I look forward to tracking what Trump does as President and how it works out.  I just might want to become involved to help things along!

How about you?

Have You Voted Yet?

Beloved hubby and I voted yesterday for this year’s general election!  How I love early voting!

We’re done.  We have done our duty, taken advantage of the great freedoms we enjoy in this country, and honored the sacrifice of the tens of millions of military forces who paid the price, over 4 million of whom gave their lives, so we could have the privilege of voting for our elected officials, and in total secrecy to boot!

Of course we’re all inundated with hundreds of calls throughout any election year, all wanting to know who you are planning to vote for, and does knowing x, y, and/or z about some candidate change the way you feel about that candidate?  I have learned that much of this is fabricated and designed to make you feel a certain way about that candidate.  So I don’t fall for those lines.

And of course the ads, and the blustering of the candidates, always get ridiculously out of hand and uglier and more vile the closer Election Day comes.  It happens every time.  Those who are elected always have a division to try to bridge and heal.  It is the same old story played out with a different cast of characters every time.

So we get involved, check what the actual facts are, pray for Heavenly Father’s help for the candidates and guidance for us in choosing the best candidates, and make the best decision that we can.  And we vote.

And I have to chuckle.  As I hear about the polls and media trying to find out who people voted for, I remember what my mother said she tells them when they ask her, “That is private!  I don’t even let my husband know who I voted for!”

Voting is a privilege.  Make sure you take advantage of it.  🙂
